Susan #1 : Balanced Wendy's Sign

Wendy's Sign

Posted on Feb 18th, 2008 by Susan #1 : Balanced Susan #1
Wendy_s_sign

On the way to the beach yesterday, we passed this Wendy's sign.  I find it funny... I think it should have been worded differently.  Evidently, Wendy's has a new fish sandwich.  The home of the old-fashioned hamburger is now selling fish.  Looking at the sign, one would think Wendy's is turning you away from burgers and telling you to get some fish... somewhere else.  With all of the horrifying things that have been revealed about the beef industry as of late, maybe Wendy's was onto something!

In case you aren't aware of the abuse that has been occuring in the beef industry, here's the video.  Please be aware that it is disturbing.  It hurts me to know that people are so cruel and greedy.  No living thing deserves to be treated this way.

Abused Cows At California Slaughterhouse

I grew up in beef land USA.  The so-called NEW abuse that is taped here, isn't anything new.  This has been going on forever in most stockyards/slaughterhouses across the country…. this goes on in farmer's pastures.

I never could eat beef…. I hated it as a child, and as soon as I could make my own decisions, beef was the first thing out of my diet.

I know poultry farms, with barns and barns of chickens, turkeys, etc…. they do the same thing.

I know many, MANY families in the Midwest who have a sick cow slaughtered IMMEDIATELY, and then sell the beef as farm-raised beef at market prices.  Obviously, not everyone stoops to these low levels…. but there are plenty of people who do.

Hi Wendy,
I know that this has probably gone on for years.  It's just really disturbing to actually see.

Hi Maze,
It is Lent… I didn't know that Wendy's had a fish sandwich (it's new), and I found the sign to be amusing.  Maybe I have a small mind… I don't know!

Hugs!

Susan, I think this sign is funny and I get your humor :)  Georgia just had a recall on beef too from a plant that abused the animals. I think they were sick as well.

One can buy organic kosher meat and poultry that is supposidly killed humanely.  Damar Farms www.damarfarms.com  Dakota Beef Company www.dakotabeefcompany.com Sheepdrove Organic Farm www.sheepdrove.com for just a few. Maybe someone else knows of some.

hugs and califlower seeds,
Sprite

Hi Sprite!
You always have the greatest closings to your messages!  Thank you for the notes on the organic kosher meat and poultry.  I was so hurt when I saw how those cows were being treated.  I'm not naive, however, I never imagined that people could treat another living thing like that.  As far as the sign is concerned, I still think it's funny… it should have said “Try our new fish sandwich!”  or “Wendy's has fish!”.  LOL!

Hugs!

no such thing as small mind for you.  Wendy's is corporate….they sell for profit.  I was being tongue In cheek. I can't imagine any of these corporations providing us any sustenance with a conscience…to them,it's always the bottom line. Check out kate's blog http://datinggod.gaia.com/

Maze- I know you were being tongue in cheek about the Lent comment.  I'm also aware of the fact that the bottom line is THE ONLY THING that matters and in more places than just the fast food industry!  It's sad the way we have allowed things to spin out of conrol in this country… too big, too greedy and often times too selfish.  Fish anyone?

I couldn't go there with that video. My sister watched the video and now she's a vegetarian. We grew up on a farm and Texas 'meat and potatoes' is in my blood. Why oh why did both my sisters develope a taste for vegetables and I can't stomach them? Why did they both have bodies that were flexible so that they could follow my mother into ballet and I inherited two left feet and short hamstrings? There are many things that I am jealous of my sisters for but the biggest is that they embraced vegetarian and I just feel so much better when I eat meat.

Oh, just for your information, I worked in a chicken factory in Oregon for 10 years and know exactly how the chickens were treated. There is no 'good' way to end a life but the way it was done at our factory was very quick and the only suffering that I saw was on the ride to the factory itself.

The trucks weren't tarped on days that the weather was okay so the chickens were exposed to the elements all the way down the freeway. I don't know if it would have been better for them to be loaded inside a truck though because the birds generate alot of heat and being closed up would have been awful for them.

Growing up on the farm and killing our own animals who had become pets to me was pretty hard but an accepted way of life. I wish that we could eat regionally instead of having our food shipped all over creation. I believe that smaller farms can do a better job of processing food in a humane and chemical free way. These mega farms cause the operators to start thinking of their stock as a commodity instead of a living breathing creature. It's harder to do that when you feed the animals by hand every day and tend them in the middle of the night when they're sick.

Wendy's is probably trying to get away from the 'Chili Finger' incident Susan! I love it when the 'corporation' allows their franchisee's to write their own signs! It results in all sorts of folly! The English language is tricky and they obviously didn't stand back from the sign and consider what message they were sending to their customers! Hee!

Hi Amber.  My oldest daughter is really interested in animal rights.  She is very sensitive when it comes to any kind of animal abuse… as she should be.  She's always watching Animal Planet.  One day, when she wasn't home, I turned the TV on.  Animal Planet was on, and the show about animal abuse was on.  It was the chicken truck clip.  I felt sick.  The chickens were practically featherless and many of them looked awful… some of them were dead.  My heart broke.  I had a pet chicken growing up, and I could never imagine her being treated that way.  I felt even worse when I heard the officer's voice.  He was a New Yorker… a tough New Yorker.  His voice wavered and cracked.  He was trying his best not to cry.  I forced back tears and I turned the television off.

I think you're right.  Smaller, more localized farms would be much better.  The problem around here is that land is at such a premium!  All of the farms have been sold off and they have been turned into communities.  I know it isn't easy to be a farmer… lots of things working against you… and all the time, too!  I suppose in many places, we've gotten too big and too far out there to go back, and that's disappointing.  I remind my daughters all the time… this is their planet.  They really need to take care of it NOW.

Hugs!

Awww, but think about the love that was behind the thought!  That's so sweet of you.  Tofu isn't that bad… I've eaten it before.  Pretty soon I'm going to be starting a pretty strict eating regimen with Karl - hey, it may even include some tofu… who knows?!?

LOL!  Too sweet!  I heard that tofu takes on the taste of the food and spices that it is cooked with.  Is that true?  It has been a million years since I've eaten it!
