What's the best letter you've ever received?
Growing up, I had the coolest parents (they are still pretty cool...). I was a naturally curious child... I wanted to know how things worked, why things were they way they were and I loved every animal and insect. When I was about 8 or so, I was given a young hen. As part of a ceremonial tradition for the first born son of Laotian friends of ours, the hen could not be killed. My father, being more accepting and patient than my mother, allowed me to keep the hen. I tended to her morning and night for the next 8 years. She was like a dog, only better. We named her Lucky, for we all knew that she was lucky - and then some.
Lucky grew old and riddled with arthritis. She still had a spark in her eyes, knew her name and was ALWAYS the queen of her roost! I went on vacation and left my best friend, Lisa, to care for Lucky. While I was away, Lucky died. Lisa wrote me a letter that only a true best friend could write. It was from the heart and completely tear stained. I have always kept that letter close to my heart... reading it every now and again, a reminder of my love for my pet and a love from a best friend. It may not have been a frilly love letter, but it was a love letter in a deeper sense. I have never told Lisa how much that letter has meant to me... even more than 20 years after the fact... It's little things like that... reminders of how truly "lucky" I am...
