Meet Ginger and Harriet
The girls wanted a guinea pig from Santa for Christmas. I've heard about it for months now. "We're asking Santa for a guinea pig!" "Yeah, and when Santa brings us our guinea pig, we're gonna play with him all the time." "Maybe we can play with our guinea pig outside!" On and on... I wasn't opposed to a guinea pig. I was prepared to arrange for one to be a part of our lives.
I had a guinea pig about 14 years ago... his name was Big Al. A colleague of mine gave him to me. Her husband had given Big Al to her as a wedding gift. As it turned out, my colleague was deathly allergic to Big Al's fur. I'm well aware of the fact that some people are super allergic to guinea pigs... it has something to do with their fur and their dander. Any how, I was prepared to welcome a guinea pig into my life. I bounced the idea off of Karl. He agreed it would be great for the kids. One day during our discussion he said "Yes, a guinea pig... or a ferret..." I looked at him. There was a twinkle in his eye and a little smirk on his face. I asked him if he was serious and he asked me why not. I toyed around with the idea for a few days.
After a little looking around (yes, there were plenty of baby ferrets waiting to be purchased at Petco, but I had other things in mind) I found two sisters for sale. I called the number and asked a few questions. The woman was moving to North Carolina, and she had way too many pets. She had to get rid of some. Karl and I drove up to Waterbury to see if the ferrets would be a good match for my daughters. An Australian Shepherd greeted us at the door. We went upstairs. Four kittens darted around our feet. Two ferrets made 7 pets. The woman also mentioned that she had two hamsters and a whole bunch of baby hamsters in her bedroom! Yikes! Too many pets. We met the ferrets and LOVED them. They would be perfect for my daughters. We adopted them.
Christmas morning had arrived. The girls ran downstairs and rubbed their eyes. A four foot tall cage stood to the right of the Christmas tree... it was covered by a sheet. The girls squealed with delight. They thought they had a guinea pig. The sheet was removed, and upon closer inspection, the girls realized that Santa had brought them a ferret... no wait! TWO ferrets!
The ferrets were named... Harriet - after Harriet The Spy and Ginger (because Bandit isn't a girl's name... don't' try and follow the logic... there isn't any!) Harriet is the one with the light mask and Ginger is the one with the dark mask. The ferrets, just like my girls, are sisters. Tonight as each girl lay on a couch with her ferret fast asleep on her chest, I chuckled to myself. There couldn't be a better match.

Awwww, they are so cute! Your girls must be thrilled!

Now you have 4 girls and they will all teach you much. You are blessed.
How nice for the ferrets to find a loving home where they are wanted and loved.
So cute!
Great story, thank you for sharing.
What precious little ones…daughters AND ferrets! Glad to hear you had a great Chrismas.
Hope the new year is filled with daily joys like this, each and every day!
Thanks for the comments and for the visit everyone! The girls (all of them) are great! The ferrets are the sweetest things I have ever seen… They love to snuggle with my daughters and when they roam around the house, they explore every nook and cranny… sometimes they have big dust bunnies on their whiskers! Too cute! I'll keep you posted as to any new news!
Hugs!

please keep us updated on the antics…giggle
thank you for a wonderful sharing..
Have a wonderful time, all of you!
Hee! And that's how one explains how one ends up with out of the ordinary pets! I adopted Boots the Santa Iguana without knowing too much about iguanas. I hope you did some research on the internet to see exactly what their diet and habits are like. I'm assuming that they are full grown! A one inch in diameter iguana grows into a 10lb 5 ft long reptile in about two years! I don't think I've ever heard of a 10 lb ferret but, hey, you never know! grinning ear to ear! You've got lucky girls! What a merry Christmas! They are adorable!
I did some research, and yes, I know what I've gotten myself into! LOL! I am a firm believer in pets… they can teach us so much. Ginger and Harriet have brought a TON of laughter into our home already. They are VERY curious, and would love to snuggle up with the cats, but the cats are really frightened… it's amusing to watch. The girls are already fast friends… I can't wait to see how things are through the years!
So what was something you learned about ferrets that you didn't know before and found yourself amazed when you read it?
I found out that iguana's get osteoperosis if they are fed a diet that is calcium deficient. Iguanas are vegetarians so you can't get them to “drink milk' I found that collard greens and mustard greens are calcium rich. I also discovered that some vegetables 'bind' calcium so that it doesn't get absorbed into the system so no broccoli, cabbage, etc. Raspberries, it turns out, are full of calcium! Who knew?!
That eventhough they are litter box trained, they will not actively seek out ther box if they have to go… keeps me busy when they are out. I like to keep an eye on where they are and what they're up to!!
Oh! so sweeeet!
Love,
Sandra
Nice! Iguana's activily seek out a place other then 'Their House' to go but that means anywhere else, including your lap, if you don't watch out! grin! Do they cross their legs when they need to go so that you know what they're up to or do you have to guess?!
LOL! No, but they do back up into a corner. I keep my eye on them and then we're ok! They're not as particular as cats, but they do groom themselves…
