Susan #1 : Balanced The Sweet Purity of A Child's Heart

The Sweet Purity of A Child's Heart

Posted on Nov 14th, 2007 by Susan #1 : Balanced Susan #1
My oldest daughter recently requested two books... A Princess Primer and If You See A Fairy Ring.  She's 10, and still believes in childhood magic... it's a nice feeling - so pure and innocent.  I looked at the books - A Princess Primer talks about how to be like a princess and If You See A Fairy Ring contains beautiful fairy poetry.  A few nights ago, she wrote a note to her Fairy Godmother and hung it on the curtain beside her bed.  She was upset when it went unanswered.  I had looked at it, but it was in CODE!  HELP... I didn't know what kind of code she had written in!  I looked at it, and tried to find a pattern, but there wasn't one.  UGH!  I let a few days go by.  She was sad that her note had gone unanswered.  I finally figured out that the code was inside A Princess Primer... and I answered the note.  She didn't see the response yet, but I'm anxious to see how she responds.  Ahh... to be a sweet and innocent child again.  I'm so lucky to see life through her eyes!

If you see a faery ring In a field of grass,
Very lightly step around,
Tip-toe as you pass,
Last night faeries frolicked there
And they're sleeping somewhere near.
If you see a tiny faery,
Lying fast asleep
Shut your eyes
And run away,
Do not stay to peek!
Do not tell
Or you'll break a faery spell.

~ William Shakespeare ~

Faery Ring

A Fairy Song

 Over hill, over dale,
Thorough bush, thorough brier,
Over park, over pale,
Thorough flood, thorough fire!
I do wander everywhere,
Swifter than the moon's sphere;
And I serve the Fairy Queen,
To dew her orbs upon the green;
The cowslips tall her pensioners be;
In their gold coats spots you see;
Those be rubies, fairy favours;
In those freckles live their savours;
I must go seek some dewdrops here,
And hang a pearl in every cowslip's ear.

William Shakespeare

Yes, I believe, believing in Santa Claus and other things is important for a child and the necessary magic. If we never have experienced magic in childhood, how can we feel it as an adult.I wonder. My mom was the big keeper of secrets. She let me believe a very long time.I'm still glad about it.

The process of discovering comes with time, not trough an adult playing wiseguy saying this or that does not exist…

David, Elke and Buddingspritelet-  Thank you for the kind words.  It isn't easy being a single mom, but I try my best to give my daughters a great childhood.  You should have seen my daughter's face when she read the note… pure joy - it was magical.  You're only a child once, and then the harsh reality of life starts to set in… although I'll admit that I still belive in the magic of Santa and of Christmas… it makes me sad to hear a young child exclaim that there isn't a Santa - I have a great blog about that one…  Elke's right, being a mom is being the big keeper of secrets, and it's all those little things that will be passed on to my daughters own children one day!

I enjoyed this post and all the notes but wish I knew what the Faerie Godmother wrote back.  Thanks Susan.  I don't have any children of my own and so enjoy, vicariously,  the joys of parenthood through the experiences of others.

<Grin> She wrote back that she will always be close… to always believe in fairies… the first note couldn't be THAT long… the code is grueling!  There isn't even a pattern to it!  What I wrote was plenty enough to satisfy.  Now I have to start planning out note #2.  Gotta love children… I'm actually still a pretty big child myself.  :-)

Thanks Ange!  I really try my best - sometimes it isn't easy.  I want my girls to look back on their childhood and have only the fondest of memories.

Hi Buddingspritelet!  So much about childhood is magical… might as well keep it alive while I still can.  Even the concept of Santa is so alive in my house - It's always awesome to see the girls' eyes light up when they see what has been left for them… I can hear the squeals of delight now.

What a darling story and what a good Mom you are to go to all that trouble to figure out the code!  When my son was four he had to have a “spacer” (i.e. bridge-like device) because he lost his four front teeth to bottle mouth (although I breast fed him!) ~ anyway, his spacer fell out on a Friday night and the child would not eat or drink, would not even swallow his own spit because his mouth felt funny and he got all freaked out.  By Sunday he was starting to dehydrate and I was frantic! I bought every treat, every drink I could think of.  Nothing worked.  So, I suggested we write to the Toothfairy and put it under his pillow.  That night the Toothfairy not only left him a little note telling him that he could eat and drink now, but she also threw magic fairy dust all over him and his bed!   Morning came, we read the letter from the Toothfairy and he checked out the fairy dust with big wide eyes and said “Mommy, I'm thirsty and hungry.  Can I have breakfast?”

You know as a grown up, we sometimes feel the need for the Fairie Godmother too.Perhaps I get all sentimental because of that :)
Great story Ayla, thank you!

Dear Susan and Ayla,

Wow, you two have the most beautiful hearts. Thank you for sharing your experiences and even more, for making your children's lives be so full of goodness. More than anything, they are learning that love is and that THEY are loved. Oh, that is so good!

Elke, I agree with you, grown ups need this kind of magic too, but a little differently. I have a really good friend who surprises me and other friends too, with little and big gifts that totally get to our hearts. I couldn't believe it the first time she did this for me – she bought me a bunch of clothes, and my eyes lit up like a little child. And it was for no reason at all, just a pure expression of love.

We really all need to feel we're worth going out on a limb for, cause we are! So, I've taken up my friends example, and started to getting my adult friends gifts of heart, just to light up their eyes, and make sure they know they're worth it. It's so beautiful and fun, and you know, the Divine seems really happy with it. It always makes this big brightness all around.

As a matter of fact, here's a story:
One time I was making a friends bed, and then I got inspired to dust his room, and start cleaning it more thoroughly. I felt how happy he'd be and how cared for. As I was cleaning and thinking of him, God filled me with this beautiful feeling of incredible love and light, a love that was deeper than I normally feel, and God said to me, “He's worth it. He should know he's absolutely WORTH it.” I just about melted in a puddle right then, the love kept pouring out and into his room.

So, as adults, I think we really ought to pour our love out to each other too, in ways that will light up each others eyes, just like your love for the kids did.

Love to all of you!

Mati

Yesterday a friend of mine came and said she would cook pasta for me next Friday. That was after I posted my comment. The Fairie Godmother stood at the door…
I found it so nice.

Sorry everyone, I'm a little behind in responding.
Ayla, what a beautiful story.  It had me grinning from ear to ear.  You sound like a wonderful Mom… it is amazing what a little magic can do.  Sometimes, being an adult, it is easy to forget about the power of magical fantasy things.  That amazes me since the notion of magic or fairies and such is so alive in children.  I guess that's what's so precious about children - they tend to ground us and they also keep us young!  Thanks for visiting my blog.

Mati Dakshina, I loved your posting too!  You are right.  Thank you for reminding us that adults need a little “magic” in their lives too!  There's nothing better than a surprise just because.  It's always nice to feel loved and appreciated.  It's also nice to know that someone else is thinking of you “just because”.  Thank you for a powerful reminder.

Elke, Your story was so heartwarming.  It's nice to give and it's nice to receive.  Thank you for sharing.

Hugs to all!
